I told one of my good friends that the title of this book would be TANGO INTOXICATION. She said, "If that means intoxication without a hangover, count me in!" She was obviously just being supportive because she doesn't even drink. For me, I NEVER drink and dance.
For the purposes of clearer explanation of this title, the traditional definition of the word intoxication and the consumption of alcohol does not apply here.
When you have been intoxicated by tango there will be no hangover, no regret. Tango intoxication is not imaginary, it is a real feeling I have experienced. It is a feeling of intoxication without the consumption of a Malbec. This very special form of intoxication is like a runners high, an endorphin laced feeling of euphoria and a soft, round glow of warmth, satisfaction, temporary love and happiness. I have felt this both during and after, sometimes way after an amazing dance or evening of dancing.
I wrote this book with the tango dancer of today and the tango dancer of tomorrow in mind. I want to share my discoveries, my love and my passion for this amazing dance and music. Alerting of the pitfalls and inspiring new tango dancers to grow and evolve is one of my main intentions.
TANGO INTOXICATION is the feeling I crave every night even before I touch my partner's hand while entering the embrace of tango. It is a special piece of magic which stupefies me, places me in an intoxicant induced state of excitement, joy and elation well beyond the limits of sobriety, a tango high. It is as if a pulsating orb of invisible, yet blurred color surrounded and gently massaged me. This is an evasive, clandestine form of intoxication that does not readily avail itself to the uninitiated. You have to work for it and even then there is no guarantee this sensation will find you.
Tango dancing has the ability to place the dancer in a trance-like state, a space where time, thirst, hunger, pain, personal and emotional problems and those of the world seem to all but completely disappear. TANGO INTOXICATION will help you understand and take that journey.
I do not profess to be an authority on the culture, music, language, dance or society from which tango emerges.
I am, however, a lifelong student and passionate lover of the dance and music that is Argentine tango. These are my findings based on my tango dancing experiences and research of many years and tonight, I will go dancing.
